Lancaster University School of Mathematics (LUSoM) is the first new build, specialist maths school supported by a University in the UK. It represents a unique centre for talented 16 to 19-year-old maths pupils from across the North West that brings them into an inclusive community of other exceptional pupils.

The project brief was to support the ‘learning community’ ethos of LUSoM, by creating an inspiring and supportive academic environment. A collaborative design and engagement process resulted in a wide range of open flexible learning spaces throughout the building for teacher tutorials, social spaces, group collaboration and solo study.

Teaching spaces are provided for degree-standard learning and feature observation booths or digital recording facilities to support best practice training to the wider teaching community. Ceramic whiteboards line the walls to encourage pupils to work on formulae in an interactive and collaborative manner.  The three-storey atrium with its ‘Hellerup’ style steps provides an inviting environment for all visitors together with an open learning setting for the students.

An outreach programme is offered to feeder schools, the public and the teaching community, with activities ranging from masterclasses to mentoring, helping to transform mathematics education across the region.

Whilst energy monitoring is being carried out, LUSoM’s energy consumption is being offset by energy generated from installed photo voltaic panels . This energy is being used for electric vehicle chargers which also reduces staff/visitor carbon footprint.

Initial post-occupancy evaluation has been undertaken with end-users with scores received demonstrating high satisfaction levels for this unique learning environment.
