The Armthorpe Academy project was part of a £35m batch of Yorkshire-based schools in the Department for Education's Priority School Building Programme (PSBP).

A new block with the potential to eventually allow the school to accommodate 900 pupils, the building was created to serve an expected increase in students following the construction of a new housing estate.

The original concept for the school had been a two-block solution, but utilising Galliford Try's Optimum Schools principles, our team developed a more cost-effective single block solution which consolidated the new facilities. The approach mirrored that taken on Galliford Try's previous North West A batch under the PSBP programme, applying the learning acquired through those schemes to benefit the clients.

The new design eventually delivered a 10% saving against the original budget, utilising the Optimum Schools component-based approach to deliver savings both during the pre-construction design period and during the build phase.

The consolidation of the teaching facilities and the new sports hall into one block meant the project could be delivered through a single construction phase, cutting 10 months off the projected programme time. In addition the approach meant that a separate construction zone could be created, lowering health and safety risks and minimising disruption of the school’s ongoing activities on the site.

We’re absolutely over the moon with the new building, we couldn’t be happier, and wish to convey our sincere thanks to Galliford Try and their supply chain. Feedback from both teachers and pupils has been nothing but positive after the move and we have clearly had a huge step change from our previous facilities." Andy Pierson Principal, Armthorpe Academy
