Galliford Try's Highways and Southern businesses received accolades at this year’s Civic Trust Awards for The Glade of Light and Building a Martian House projects, respectively.
Claiming the Community Impact and Engagement Special Award, the Glade of Light project delivered a permanent memorial garden and marble halo centrepiece, providing a tranquil and reflective space to remember those that tragically lost their lives in the 2017 Manchester Arena terror attack.
Judges praised the design and build project as a “quiet yet bold installation”, stating that the “overall composition is exceptional with the landscaping and planting being a soft and responsive reflection of the existing public realm and surrounding environs”.
Meanwhile, Galliford Try Building Southern’s work on Martian House, a project which considers what life would really be like on Mars, led by the Southern Construction Framework (SCF), with funding from the Edward Marshall Trust and built with eight other construction companies, received the ‘Pro Tem’ award. This award recognises temporary projects that demonstrate excellence in architecture, design and make a positive contribution to the community.
Designed to be built partially below the ground in the Martian lava tubes, Martian House is a futuristic 53 sqm house comprising two storeys, with a solar panel powered upper level, Virtual Reality (VR) area, private living space and a built-in ecosystem.
Bill Hocking, Chief Executive of Galliford Try, commented: “As part of our purpose to create infrastructure and buildings that make a lasting impact on communities, it's wonderful to see Martian House and The Glade of Light being recognised for benefiting their communities in this way. Congratulations to all the teams and partners involved.”
