As National Apprenticeship Week gets underway, the team on Galliford Try’s Monk Bridge project are celebrating their efforts to get trainees involved throughout the supply chain, having created more than 1,000 weeks’ worth of apprenticeship training at the scheme.

The major project in the heart of Leeds is seeing the creation of 665 new homes in a £106m private rental scheme, including a mixture of one, two, and three-bed apartments.

In total, 86 apprentices have been involved in work at the development across trades such as joinery, bricklaying, electricians, and site management. The total time equates to over 20 years’ of on-site experience for people in the area.

Rebecca Caunce, Corporate Responsibility Manager for Galliford Try Building North East and Yorkshire, said: “We had originally set a target of 300 weeks’ worth of apprenticeship learning. That figure is already three times that of a typical project, so to pass the 1,000-week mark is an extraordinary effort on behalf of the team and our supply chain, and reflects our deep commitment to our early careers programme.”

The company’s Advantage through Alignment initiative has been key to achieving social value goals such as this. It centres around developing collaborative, long-term relationships with supply chain members, ensuring subcontractors share its values on issues such as vocational training, and enabling the development of entrants to the industry.

Steve Hart, Project Director at Galliford Try, said: “The individuals we’ve had on site have been exceptional and will no doubt become valued members of the construction industry. It’s great to see just how much talent apprenticeship programmes are developing.

“Congratulations are also due to our subcontractors, who see the bigger picture and are investing in the workforce of tomorrow.”
