The £42m National Manufacturing Institute Scotland (NMIS) project sees the redevelopment of a new flagship facility situated in the heart of Renfrewshire, which will work collaboratively with the existing specialist technology centres.

Operated by the University of Strathclyde and supported by Scottish Government, Scottish Enterprise, Highlands and Islands Enterprise, High Value Manufacturing Catapult, Skills Development Scotland, Scottish Funding Council and Renfrewshire Council, the Renfrewshire’s Advanced Manufacturing Innovation District Scotland (AMIDS) is an open space HQ building that will inspire knowledge and creativity.

The 11,500m2 building will be the University of Strathclyde’s first operationally carbon neutral building and will house the fully digital NMIS Digital Factory, Manufacturing Skills Academy and publicly accessible collaboration hub that will bring manufacturers together to work on the development of innovative new manufacturing technologies from all sectors across the country and internationally, to innovate and grow their businesses in the global market.

At around 1.5 times the size of Hampden football pitch and clearly identifiable from the sky above near Glasglow Airport, the striking building facility is set to be the main focus for the future of manufacturing in Scotland. Working towards ensuring the building was awarded BREEAM ‘outstanding’ excellence for sustainability, the Morrison Construction team carefully avoided the use of polluted materials such as concrete and other quarried aggregates, making sure to keep carbon emissions low and avoid the use of materials that were manufactured overseas.
