Galliford Try was appointed by the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) to create a new medical, dental and primary casualty receiving facility at the RAF Valley military base in Anglesey, replacing the existing medical facility at the site.

Sustainability was high on the agenda, with the incorporation of photovoltaic panels providing greater energy efficiency and the recycling 90% of waste from the construction site helping the project achieve a DREAM “Excellent” rating. The team supported local communities, including nearby school site visits, and supported an RAF Valley Families Day, running STEM sessions and engaging with over 80 children across the event.

The project was designed to BIM level 2 in compliance with DIO’s requirements, with training provided for the client and supply chain to ensure all parties gained maximum benefit from the process.

Numerous stakeholders were consulted and coordinated through the Stakeholder Management Plan to ensure that the design, commissioning and site works were carried out to everyone’s satisfaction, lines of communication were effective, and an environment of collaboration was maintained.

Key stakeholders were taken to view and learn lessons from previous similar projects. This informed staff on key design choices including a Central Sterile Services Department (CSSD) within the facility, benefiting future clinical standards at the centre.

Despite being ‘outside the wire’, Counter Terrorism Measures had to be incorporated into the design, including roofing, windows and security systems. Off-site precast concrete units were used in the structure of the main new-build facility.
