The Vine Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) College, built by Galliford Try’s Building North East and Yorkshire team, has been shortlisted by Constructing Excellence in Yorkshire and Humber for its Value award.

The Value award aims to recognise projects that have integrated stakeholder value into their work to maximise future value for end users. Contractors must also demonstrate how they engaged the supply chain in order to ensure they fully understood the value required by each stakeholder.

The £10m project aims to provide the city of Leeds with its own dedicated SEND college, as previously, SEND students were required to travel outside of the city to receive care in dedicated facilities.

The new facilities include extra-wide corridors and doors for bed and wheelchair users, as well as large classrooms and wellbeing rooms which exploit natural light. The new college also features a trampoline, which will benefit students with autism, and a hydrotherapy pool to provide sensory stimulation. Additionally included are accessible kitchen classrooms, to help students develop essential life skills.

Cliff Wheatley, Managing Director for Galliford Try Building North East and Yorkshire, commented: “This new college is a much-needed facility that will support young adults in Leeds and the surrounding areas with special needs and disabilities for years to come.

“We are particularly proud of the project and the difference it will make to the community.”

The awards ceremony will take place on 6 July.
