The 224 Youth Zone, named by Bristol’s local young people, representing ‘today, tomorrow, forever’, reflecting the centre’s long-term commitment to supporting future generations, has officially opened its doors to the community.
The official opening welcomed over 1,000 young people and was attended by Karin Smyth MP, Minister of State for Secondary Care and Bristol South MP, Yassin Mohamud, Lord Mayor of Bristol, Anne Nisbet, High Sheriff of the City and County of Bristol, Heather Frankham MBE DL, Chair of Trustees, 224 Youth Zone, Matt Justice, Chief Executive, 224 Youth Zone and Geoff Barrow, 224 Ambassador.
Located in the heart of South Bristol, the centre developed by local charity Youth Moves in partnership with OnSide and Bristol City Council offers access to more than 20 activities, including sports, creative arts, youth work and employability training. The £11m state-of-the-art facility will provide opportunities for an additional 4,000 young people aged 8–19, and up to 25 for those with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).
Throughout the construction phase Galliford Try Building West Midlands and South West business delivered over £9.9m in generated social value directly into the local community. Focusing on local supply chain to small and medium enterprises (SMEs) within a 30-mile radius, the business intentionally stimulated local economic expansion by delivering over 450 hours of targeted pre-employment and educational engagement with local schools and colleges.
Simon Courtney, Managing Director for Galliford Try Building West Midlands and South West, commented: "This is a project that will make a real difference to the community, and we're incredibly proud to have played a part in bringing it to life. We're excited to see how the Youth Zone grows and supports young people in the years ahead. We look forward to continuing our partnership with the Youth Zone and supporting opportunities that help young people develop skills, build confidence and prepare for future employment."
