Galliford Try has been awarded Low Carbon Project of the Year Award for saving almost 5,000t of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions - the carbon footprint of roughly 520 typical UK residents – at the Melton Mowbray Distributor Road (MMDR) by the Construction News (CN) Awards.

The 7.5km MMDR scheme delivered on behalf of Leicestershire County Council, links the north and east of Melton Mowbray and features six new roundabouts, four bridges and the diversion of the River Eye 100 metres from its course.

Significant carbon savings have been delivered across the project by harnessing a real-time digital carbon tracking platform, transitioning from fossil fuels to electric and hybrid energy solutions, and embedding Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) through innovative design optimisation.

Judges praised the scheme for its “impressive range of carbon reduction measures” noting that the “project demonstrates strong client satisfaction and a great potential to change how roads are built in future."

In addition, the business was a finalist for three other prizes.

Luke Winch, Low Carbon Manager for Galliford Try, received recognition in the Carbon Reduction Champion category for his outstanding work in driving carbon reduction across the Infrastructure business. Meanwhile, the team on the Carlisle Southern Link Road project was shortlisted for both the Supply Chain Collaboration Excellence Award and MMC Project of the Year.

Commenting on the award, Liz Bell, Operations Director for Galliford Try’s Infrastructure business, said: “Winning Low Carbon Project of the Year is a fantastic achievement and a reflection of the extraordinary commitment, expertise and teamwork. Over the last three years, the team has delivered a truly industry-leading scheme that is redefining expectations around sustainability and low-carbon infrastructure. This recognition belongs to everyone who has contributed to the project's success, and I would like to congratulate the entire team and our stakeholders on this well-deserved accolade. We’re also delighted to have made it so far with Luke’s nomination and the work of the team at CSLR which have also been extraordinary.”

Colin Marrs, editor of Construction News, commented: “I would like to congratulate every one of this year’s winners and finalists on their well-deserved recognition. The quality of the entries demonstrates the ambition, expertise and determination that continue to transform our sector, despite the challenges it faces. Everyone honoured this year has made an outstanding contribution to the industry and should take great pride in their achievement.”
