Galliford Try’s Building West Midlands and South West business has signed a contract to redevelop Hill West Primary School in Birmingham.
The £17m project has been awarded under the Department for Education (DfE) framework and will replace the old school building, with a new modern two-storey building which will be Net Zero Carbon in Operation (NZCiO). The school will aim to produce as much energy as it consumes, achieving carbon neutrality through renewable energy sources and energy-efficient design.
The design for the new school, which is part of the Arthur Terry Learning Partnership, will foster collaboration and ensure that education is accessible to all, within nurturing, inclusive, and aspirational learning environments. Outdoor learning areas will foster connections with nature and support a strong focus on environmental education.
Construction has been carefully phased to ensure the school remains fully operational throughout the works. Temporary footpaths and fencing with vision panels will maintain safe separation between pupils and construction activities, while tree protection measures will help preserve the surrounding natural environment.
Simon Courtney, Managing Director for Galliford Try Building West Midlands and South West, said: “We are delighted to be working with the Department for Education on the redevelopment of Hill West Primary School to deliver a high-quality and sustainable building for pupils and staff. This project reflects our ongoing commitment to creating learning environments that not only meet the needs of today’s students but also support the UK’s wider net-zero ambitions.”
