The Stonebow Mental Health Unit Project, delivered by Galliford Try’s Building West Midlands and South West business has been shortlisted for Refurbishment Project of the Year at the Institute of Healthcare Engineering and Estates Management (IHEEM) Awards.
The £11m project in Hereford, delivered on behalf of the Herefordshire and Worcestershire Health and Care NHS Trust, required the complete refurbishment and expansion of the existing mental health unit to create 100% single en-suite rooms, while maintaining full-service user occupation.
The project has enhanced facilities for adult, older adult, and dementia patients, providing 39 single en-suite bedrooms facilities on the ground floor to enable patients easy access to the gardens and to create room on the first floor for staff welfare.
Designed by Design Buro, the refurbishment incorporated the latest innovations in care, presenting adaptable, interlinked wards tailored to patients' needs aligning with the Modernising the Mental Health Act 2018 to phase out dormitory-style accommodation, and supporting staff in creating spaces to meet the varied needs of all service users.
Commenting on the award nomination, Laura Hodgetts, Health Director for Galliford Try, said: "This recognition highlights Galliford Try’s expertise in delivering high-quality, sustainable mental healthcare facilities while acknowledging the sensitivities of working within live healthcare environments. We are proud to play our part in supporting the NHS with projects that truly make a difference, and it is fantastic that the efforts of our team and the Trust have been recognised by IHEEM.”
The IHEEM Awards celebrate excellence in the healthcare estates sector, honouring organisations and individuals who demonstrate outstanding achievement, innovation and leadership.
Winners will be announced at a gala ceremony on 21 October in Manchester.
