Heather Bryant and Eileen Mackin have been nominated as finalists at the Inspiring Women in Construction and Engineering Awards.

Heather, Corporate Social Responsibility Manager for Galliford Try’s Southern business, was recognised for her contribution to the HMP High Down project in partnership with the Minister of Justice (MoJ). The scheme created a brand-new rehabilitation pilot called Construction Mentorship Partnering Scheme (CMPS), a first for the prison, Galliford Try and in the UK.

The initiative enables Galliford Try to engage with prisoners, providing them with work experience and training on a live construction site to provide greater opportunities upon release, reducing the likelihood of reoffending and helping them reintegrate into society.

Eileen, Project Director, who works for partner organisation Hub South East Scotland, has made an outstanding contribution to Morrison Construction’s new £15m Beatlie School project, a specialist school for pupils aged three to 18 with severe and complex support needs and profound medical needs.

Through her leadership and stakeholder management skills, she has immersed herself with the young people and staff at Beatlie School, including raising more than £9,000 by participating in a skydive.

Roddy Clark, Operations Director for Hub South East, commented: “Beatlie is a special place and it needed a special person to take the lead and ensure the best possible solution for its young people. Eileen is that person and we’re incredibly proud, not only of the high quality work completed, but the passion and determination she has shown throughout.”

Commenting on Heather’s nomination, Gavin Bridge, Managing Director for Galliford Try Building Southern, said: “Heather has made an outstanding contribution to an exceptionally worthwhile scheme at HMP High Down. Her drive and determination to push the mentoring scheme forward has been inspiring to us all.”

The Inspiring Women in Construction and Engineering Awards created by Construction News and New Civil Engineer celebrate women who are paving the way in the construction industry who are making outstanding contributions.
