Ministry of Defence appoints Galliford Try to £5.1bn Strategic Alliance

Date 11 May 2023

Galliford Try’s Building business has signed a Strategic Alliance Contract with the Defence Infrastructure Organisation on behalf of the Ministry of Defence (MoD), to deliver two new packages within the Defence Estate Optimisation (DEO) portfolio.

The DEO is a £5.1bn investment portfolio which is focused on delivering a better structured, modern and more sustainable estate that more effectively supports military capability and aims to enhance the lived experience of our military personnel.

At the heart of DEO’s vision is a significant construction and refurbishment programme for both single living and service family accommodation as well as a range of, operational, educational, and technical facilities which spans the MoD’s UK estate.

Galliford Try was successful in its bid to win the Air & UK Strategic Command regional package which includes refurbishment, new-build and single living accommodation projects at RAF bases and Strategic Command facilities across the country, including RAF Brize Norton.

Secondly, the business has been appointed to a major project package which involves the reconfiguration of accommodation and ancillary facilities at Munster Barracks in Catterick Garrison. Together the two packages are worth up to an estimated £387m.

Bill Hocking, Chief Executive of Galliford Try, commented: “The DEOP packages have been a long-term target for our business, with defence one of the key sectors in our Sustainable Growth Strategy. We are delighted to have been selected by the DIO for these workstreams which will provide us with a fantastic pipeline for years to come.”

Sherin Aminossehe, Director of Infrastructure for MoD, said: “The Strategic Alliance Contract for the Defence Estate Optimisation Portfolio will allow us to capitalise on the wealth of knowledge within the construction industry and harness that expertise in a way we’ve not previously done. The contract will ensure we can deliver the right buildings and infrastructure for Defence that will enable our military capability and create the right environment for our people to train, work and live in. We will be delivering at pace and start to see the benefits straight away within projects being mobilised this year.

“This important milestone marks the culmination of a lot of hard work and dedication by the Defence Estate Optimisation team and I offer my congratulations to them as well as to the successful contractors who we look forward to working with in delivering our shared vision.”
