Typhoon Future Synthetic Training Facility

Client BAE Systems

Sector Defence

Location East Midlands, Highlands

Value £50m

Galliford Try secured two separate contracts to construct Typhoon Future Synthetic Training Facilities for BAE systems at RAF Lossiemouth and RAF Coningsby.

The projects include diversion of existing services, the demolition of a redundant bunker, new build facilities and the refurbishment of existing facilities

To exploit the similarities between the new facilities on both sites to the maximum benefit for the Client and ourselves, we have employed the same design teams on both sites, ensuring we take full advantage of efficiency in design – design once, build twice. In addition, the site teams on each base worked in close collaboration to ensure that the projects ran in a similar manner, meeting regularly and sharing any lessons learnt immediately.

A programme of design submissions and approvals has been agreed to ensure strict adherence to programme, incorporating submissions from specialists including piling, sprinklers and gas suppression. Reference designs from the Client team were provided at RIBA stage 3, which was taken through to completion with full design responsibility.

The projects were under construction throughout the height of the Covid-19 pandemic with the whole site, including the site minibus, welfare, offices and working areas being fully compliant with social distancing measures, and with testing facilities being available on site in accordance with company policy.

Ecology measures are incorporated into the projects, including the construction of a new bat barn, and the new build facilities are required to achieve DREAM Excellent.
