Galliford Try has been working in joint venture with Costain on the Smart Motorways programme since its appointment in 2015 to Highways England’s framework.

The nationwide programme is seeing 292 extra lane miles added to motorways. Hard shoulders are being converted to traffic lanes and signing and technology will tell drivers what speed to drive at, if lanes are blocked or closed and about incidents ahead.

The first tranche of work undertaken by the joint venture was the upgrade of the M1 between junctions 16 and 19 in Bedfordshire. The scheme won Highways England’s Smart Motorways Programme Project of the Year award in 2018 based on its record for safety, customer service and delivery.

The second tranche involved another stretch of the same motorway between junctions 24 and 25 in the East Midlands while the third tranche is located between junctions 16 and 19 in Northamptonshire and Bedfordshire.

In addition, Galliford Try is also currently undertaking a project to design and construct a Smart motorway scheme on the M56 between junctions 6 and 8 to the west of Manchester Airport. Works include upgrading pavements, barriers and drainage as well as installation of gantries, emergency refuge areas and technical equipment.
