The new Maple Centre Unit at Milton Keynes Hospital previously known as the Pathway Unit, provides same day emergency care to ease pressure on A&E.

The Maple Centre, which has a 26-bed acute medical assessment ward on the first floor and 16 assessment rooms on the ground floor, gives immediate emergency care to patients without them being admitted to hospital. A multi-disciplinary team assesses, treats and discharges patients on the same day helping to reduce bed occupancy. Patients requiring further treatment are admitted.

The building was constructed using an engineered raft solution to protect the root structure of adjacent trees, steel frame and metal deck. The facade is full brickwork to all elevations with a hot melt roof and roof-top plant.

The Galliford Try team worked in collaboration with hospital management to make sure the construction works did not impact the day-to-day operation of the adjacent A&E department and other parts of the hospital. The project was procured through the P22 NHS framework and follows on from the delivery of a new Cancer Centre by Galliford Try in 2020.
