The Joint Services Mountain Training Wing facility at Halton provides a specialist facility for outdoor and mountain terrain training.

Galliford Try were engaged by the Defence Infrastructure Organisation to relocate  personnel and materiel for the Army Adventurous Training Group facility to from Deverell Barracks in Ripon to Halton Barracks near Lancaster.

The works included the design and construction of a new build headquarters, stores and technical building, a new build 48-bed space transit accommodation for course students and the refurbishment of an existing building into an activity centre including the integration of existing climbing equipment that was relocated from Deverell.

All designs were carried out to BIM Level 2 and we were required to achieve DREAM Excellent for the new construction, while the long, narrow shape of the site meant that the locations of the new facilities needed to be considered in terms of stand-off distances for Counter Terrorism Measures (CTM) in accordance with JSP 440. Galliford Try’s CTM Adviser worked with DIO to ensure that proposals were acceptable.

Halton Camp is also home to an active Helicopter Landing Site and therefore Waste Management including the Foreign Object Debris (FOD) plan were of prime importance during the construction phase.
