CTIL Replacement Tower

Client Cornerstone Telecommunications Infrastructure Ltd (CTIL)

Sector Telecoms

Location East Midlands

Value £130k

Galliford Try were instructed by client CTIL to acquire, design and construct a replacement tower on the site for the second tallest telecoms specific monopole in the UK.

The old tower, standing at 38m, was located in dense woodland at the end of a narrow access track, including crossing an old privately owned multiple-arch low-level bridge. Additionally, during a routine inspection, a vertical crack was identified on an existing monopole causing slight movement in the structure. Due to the instability of the existing structure, the tower could not be climbed to either ascertain the necessary work at height or assist with the decommissioning works.

The Telecoms team worked with Galliford Try's Central Engineering Services unit to complete detailed structural integrity check of the existing bridge to ensure it was strong enough for the crane required to install and remove the structures.

There were also environmental considerations including extensive surveys for nesting birds, for which a drone was used to complete a nesting bird review and cross reference existing equipment installed on site.
