Galliford Try has commenced construction of a new £14m state-of-the-art leisure facility in Thornaby Town Centre, on behalf of Stockon-on-Tees Borough Council, awarded via the Procure Partnerships North East Framework.

The new two-storey facility will feature a five-lane swimming pool, gym, sauna and modern changing facilities. It will enhance the internal layout and fitness spaces within the existing Thornaby Pavilion. A first-floor link bridge will connect the new building to the pavilion, while a new entrance and extended car park will provide 46 additional spaces. Improvements to the surrounding public realm will further enhance accessibility and the overall visitor experience.

Located on the former Phoenix House site, the new leisure centre is expected to open in summer 2027. It will be operated by Tees Active and will expand learn-to-swim opportunities, support school swimming partnerships and promote healthier lifestyles across the community.

The project is funded through the Town Deal, with additional support from Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council and Sport England. It forms part of a wider programme of regeneration activity endorsed by the Thornaby Town Deal Board.

Jeremy Barnett, Managing Director for Galliford Try Building North East and Yorkshire, said: “We are proud to be delivering this important facility for Thornaby. The new leisure centre will provide high-quality sports and wellbeing facilities for local people while contributing to the ongoing regeneration of the town centre. We look forward to working collaboratively with all partners to bring this transformative project to life.”
