With National Careers Week celebrating careers guidance across the UK, Galliford Try's support for T Level courses provides the perfect starting point for younger generations to begin their careers in the industry by providing the industry placement element of the qualification.
T Levels are equivalent to three A Levels, which give a mixture of classroom and practical learning, including, in our case, work placements within the construction environment, of at least 45 days.
Oliver Mills
Our Building North East and Yorkshire business welcomed its first T Level student, Oliver Mills, who will be gaining invaluable workplace experience at Greenhead College and Project Anchor to support his studies. Oliver started his two-year course in Design, Surveying and Planning at Wakefield College in September 2022. He aspires to work in a design-related role and will be shadowing Senior Design Manager Mark Dean to learn more about the opportunities available. Oliver said: “I’m looking forward to getting started and gaining hands-on experience within the construction industry. By completing this work experience, I hope to gain the skills needed to take my education to the next level.”
Elliot Sena
Elliot Sena, from our Building West Midlands and South West team, has been studying the Design, Surveying and Planning course at Thomas Telford University Technical College since February 2022. Since joining, Elliot has worked on a number of projects including; 2 Colmore Square, Cannon House, and the award-winning Perry Barr Station. With his course now coming to an end, Elliot will continue his journey with Galliford Try as a new apprentice. Elliot said: "With Galliford Try's support during my T Level course, I have been able to move forward in my career as I begin my apprenticeship. I am excited about this fantastic opportunity and look forward to expanding my knowledge in the industry."
T Levels are an important part of the new avenues opening up for involving young people in construction careers, forming an important aspect for those considering careers in technical industries.
Rebecca Caunce, Corporate Responsibility Manager for Galliford Try Building North East and Yorkshire, said: “T Levels are an exciting new qualification for young people wanting to join our industry, providing invaluable hands-on experience, alongside academic study.
“As host employers, we have a great opportunity to work with local young people, nurturing their skills and knowledge, while hopefully growing our own early careers talent pool for exceptional students.”
Dawn Jevons, Regional Community and Social Impact Manager for West Midlands and South West, commented: “T Levels offer a technical qualification that we value. It was a pleasure for us to have a delightful student take part in our first T Level placement, which gave the student an opportunity to experience a work environment for the first time.
“From sitting in on senior meetings to handling documents and drawings, and working with our supply chain partners on site, our students gain first-hand exposure to a wide range of construction disciplines and experiences.”
