In order to deliver a dramatic improvement to the water quality of the Firth of Tay estuary both in terms of bathing water and beach quality, Scottish Water instigated the Tay Wastewater scheme.

The project involves the design, construction, operation and finance of the new Hatton wastewater treatment plant servicing the Dundee and Arbroath catchment areas together with 35km of wastewater pumping main and seven pumping stations each with storm overflow storage facilities.

Storm overflows to the sea are closely monitored by the Scottish Environment Protection Agency and it is agreed that the improvement to the local environment has been excellent.

Uniquely the project was funded by way of a £100 million privately placed bond.
