Value: £42 million
Location: Headington, Oxford
This project has created a new orthopaedic hospital on the site of an existing facility that had outlived its usefulness.
The hospital design is an innovative one using a concentric hub and spoke system that has the main atrium as the hub with the wards and the other clinical services spanning out from there. This allows far better control of patients and visitors with outpatients by the main entrance and promotes efficient adjacencies such as the Pathology department sitting next to the theatres. The circular design also allows for future expansion which is already being thought of for the sterile service department.
The project has been partially funded by a charitable donation from the Nuffield Hospital Appeal Fund and the NOC has also funded a vital hydrotherapy pool. The Nuffield’s contribution of £5 million has resulted in a lower unitary charge to be paid by the NHS Trust.
