The Tier 1 Framework Contract for the demolition and remediation works for the Northern Area of the Olympic development zone, London is being undertaken by Galliford Try.
The scope of work under the Contract for Tier 1 Contractors includes the design and construction of demolition, remediation, bulk earthworks and associated civils work over a four year period from June 2006.
Morrison Construction has cleared the area to provide a level platform for construction. A large number of buildings including two tower blocks have been demolished and some additional work that has been carried out included the re-routing of Henniker’s Ditch, a contaminated water course that dates back to the Middle Ages, through a culvert.
The 2012 Olympics will be billed as the most green ever staged and so material from the site is being reused and recycled to keep the use of outside resources and waste from the site to a minimum. This includes the construction of a soil treatment centre to clean contaminated soil for reuse. A 95 per cent level of site recycling is currently being achieved.
Reduced travel times, transportation costs are reducing the site's carbon footprint by recruiting local personnel and suppliers. Site staff and visitors are encouraged to walk, cycle or take public transport to the site. Bicycle racks have been setup inside the main site compound and a specially commissioned mini bus runs to and from the local station every 15 minutes.
