The new station was constructed to replace the existing station using the a significant portion of the existing building fabric.
The design and build contract involved the set up of temporary ticket office facilities and a footbridge to enable the existing facilities to be decommissioned and demolished and the footbridge removed from site.
The new facility was then constructed in the same location, providing a new ticket office, passenger lounge, toilets, a retail kiosk (coffee shop and snacks), new lifts to provide disabled access and new staircases to replace the existing ramps from the street down to platform level.
The new station has been designed to use as much natural light as possible, creating an air of openness and space to the whole building. Additionally, at platform level there are new canopies to give better weather protection to the travelling public and the platforms have also been refurbished. For foot passengers, a new forecourt was constructed and will create a welcoming environment which will also have current train information displays.
To assist security measures CCTV cameras were installed along with new lighting both on the platforms and within and around the station building.
