Newport Station

Client: Network Rail
Value: £13 million
Location: South Wales

Galliford Try has constructed this futuristic rail terminal in Newport using an unlikely combination of materials - specialist section steel in ornate shapes with ETFE (Ethylene tetrafluoroethylene - a translucent, inflatable cushionlike material).

Linked by a steel footbridge, two striking oculi at either end of the station have been constructed using ETFE, which has previously been used on projects such as the Beijing Olympic stadium and Cornwall’s Eden Project. ETFE allows natural light to enter the station but screens out ultraviolet rays which would otherwise increase the internal temperature rapidly.

The footbridge additionally connects to an island platform in between the intermediary tracks via stairs and a third lift. Accommodation blocks for the police, train operating company and retail units are also linked to the oculi.

The station redevelopment represents a step change in transport design.
