This design and build project comprised the delivery of the new Halley VI Research Station, providing science laboratories and living facilities to enable the study of the earth’s atmosphere.
Halley VI was constructed in one of the least hospitable environments known to man, and has been built to survive harsh conditions on the Brunt Ice Shelf, a 200m thick ice layer moving at the rate of 0.5km per year where temperatures can drop to -55°C. The station's hydraulic legs allow it to be lifted each year to overcome the accumulation of snow and to compensate for the movement of the ice.
Despite the challenges presented by the environment - the risk of being caught in a blizzard, the disorientating white surroundings and the danger of ultraviolet radiation - the Halley VI team excelled in health and safety, winning worldwide recognition in the form of an "International Safety Award" from the British Safety Council.
