Rothes FAS

Client: The Moray Council
Value:
£15 million
Location:
Rothes

This is the third scheme to be delivered as part of the Moray Flood Alleviation contract. The concept is to increase the capacity of three burns flowing through Rothes, namely Back Burn, Black Burn and Burn of Rothes, to accommodate a 1 in 100 year flood plus an allowance for climate change.

The works comprise:

  • channel widening/deepening
  • replacement of existing bridges to accommodate a wider channel
  • reinforced concrete flood walls and mini-piled foundations
  • earthworks embankments with a low permeability fill
  • bank protection works to prevent future scour

The works are programmed to suit various environmental constraints including salmon spawning, all three burns being tributaries of the River Spey a mile downstream.
