Galliford Try is a national housebuilding and construction company delivering industry leading performance in the construction of a sustainable future.
Client: The Moray Council
Value: £9.5 million
Location: Forres
This scheme provides protection from the Burn of Mosset waters.
Works comprised the construction of an earthworks dam with sheet piled cut-off to create the required storage capacity; a piled reinforced concrete control structure (baffle crump weir) through the dam, limiting the downstream flow to the capacity of the existing channel through Forres; and a number of secondary embankments to contain floodwaters around the perimeter of the flood storage area; channel improvements remote from the main site at Rafford Burn and within Forres.
The water supply to Benromach Distillery has its source within the site and crosses beneath the dam, which required great care in constructing a permanent diversion.
Throughout works, Galliford Try remained considerate to local badger, otter and salmon activity. Additionally, a temporary diversion of the watercourse to allow construction of the control structure was designed to dissuade spawning fish in this area.
This is the second scheme to be delivered as part of the Moray Flood Alleviation contract, the purpose of which was to attenuate flood waters of the Burn of Mosset upstream of Forres, and provide sufficient storage capacity for a 1 in 100 year event plus an allowance for climate change.
This project received Commendations in the "Project" and "Environmental"categories at the 2010 Saltire Society Awards.
