This project has created a new orthopaedic hospital on the site of an existing facility that had outlived its usefulness.
The hospital design is an innovative one using a concentric hub and spoke system that has the main atrium as the hub, with the wards and the other clinical services spanning out from there. This allows far better control of patients and visitors with outpatients by the main entrance and promotes efficient adjacencies such as the pathology department sitting next to the theatres.
The circular design also allows for future expansion which is already being considered for the sterile service department.
The project has been partially funded by a charitable donation from the Nuffield Hospital Appeal Fund and the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre has also funded a vital hydrotherapy pool. The contributions have resulted in a lower unitary charge to be paid by the NHS Trust.
NHS Estates said: “Harnessing the natural elements through the design to reduce stress and create a warm therapeutic environment has helped provide a healing environment to uplift and inspire patients, visitors and staff”
Andrew Smith MP Oxford East said: “The hospital and its staff and patients have benefited from the increased Government health expenditure and spending on the private finance initiative project that is providing the new building and its servicing, with the result that we have a remarkable hospital with remarkable staff and remarkable public support.”
