When awarded, this scheme to upgrade 41 schools within Northamptonshire was the largest grouped schools project ever undertaken in the UK, and with the successful delivery of 41 schools to time, cost and quality it is a testament to the partnership working between public and private sectors.
With most of the schools being refurbished and extended, the major challenge was to continue the students’ education without interruption and disruption. This was achieved through involving the schools’ staff in the planning and sequencing of events at their own school and ensuring ongoing participation as the works progressed.
Community involvement was of great importance and the schools all had new community facilities, special needs provision, designated special provision areas, nurseries, sports halls, gymnasia and all-weather pitches included.
An example of the new facilities being incorporated is Mereway College where, in addition to the new sports facilities, the 1,500-pupil college boasts a state-of-the-art theatre that befits its status as the only specialist performing arts college in Northampton. It also offers specialist provision for construction, hair and beauty, hospitality and catering, as well as the traditional academic subjects.
Peter Burrell, Northamptonshire County Council Project Manager said: "The work Galliford Try has done has always been carried out in a highly professional manner and the news chools are fantastic spaces. Overwhelmingly schools are very impressed by the work which has been completed. A very positive impact has already been identified in many schools with improved behaviour and performance."
