Works were carried out through the BW Omnibus Contract to improve the utility of the Foxton Locks tourist attraction and enhance the appearance of the original Inclined Plane. Project planning issues included installation of an earthworks dam for access to the lower basin and distribution of diversion plans to the public as surfacing works were carried out during the peak of the tourist season. Further approval of Methodology was required from English Heritage as the entire site is a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
Works included:
- Renewal of original Upper Arm leading to historic Inclined Plane, briefly comprising; reprofiling of original abandoned arm of canal during peak of tourist season, installation of approximately 1000 sq m of sheetpiles to stablilise existing embankment, installation of approx 3000 sq mbutyl lining, concrete lining and blockwork vegetation shelves, installation of steel framed bridge and viewing platform.
- Extensive improvements to existing towpath surfacing to perimeter of locks.
- Provision of disabled access ramps to improve usability for all.
- Upgrade works to lower canal basin leading to Inclined Plane, briefly comprising: installation of 300 ton stone dam to enable works area to be dewatered, initial clearance of approximately 2000 m cu of silt, repairs to dilapidated brickwork and copings, renewal of timber walkway under strict compliance of archaeological watching brief, installation of 400m of auger bored piles to stabilise landslip of embankment, upgrade to drainage and surfacing of existing car park facilities.
