The project comprised the construction of a new wall, 240m long by 15m high, including counterforts to accommodation and 1,000 tonne lift capacity from the top.
Regrading existing dock slopes (210,000 sq m) and placing 170,000t armour on top of filter membrane was also required, in addition to the refurbishment of the existing dock gate. Further works consisted of substantial mechanical and electrical upgrading/replacement. 6,000 cubic metres of diesel contaminated material was bio-remediated on a purpose built treatment bed to the requirements and satisfaction of SEPA.
A risk sharing alliance with the client meant that the project should finish under budget and the financial benefits would be shared, as would the burden of any overruns.
This project won a Design and Construct Award from the Saltire Society, medium-sized project of the year from the Quality in Construction Awards and Civil Engineering Contractor of the Year from the Contract Journal and Construction Industry Awards.
