Halley VI Research Station, Antarctica

Galliford Try is undertaking a contract to design and build the new Halley VI Research Station in Antarctica for the British Antarctic Survey. The building will be located on skis on the Brunt Ice Shelf which is a 200m thick ice layer moving at the rate of 0.5km per year.

The innovative design allows the building to be hydraulically lifted each year to overcome the accumulation of snow and ice and also allows it to be relocated inland to compensate for the movement of the ice. The building has to provide full life support services for up to 50 people and withstand the severe Antarctic climate where temperatures can drop to -55°C.

Client: The British Antarctic Survey
Value: £22 million
Duration: September 2006 – February 2010 with 8 months build phased over three Antarctic seasons.
Location: Antarctica
