Wigan FAS, Channel Works (Phase 1)

This project involved flood alleviation works to the River Douglas where it passes through the south of Wigan town centre where there is a history of flooding from the river. The construction package has been split into three main phases, the first of which comprises the construction of the downstream defences and channel remedial works.

The contract is split into three sites: Pottery Terrace to Melverley Street, Melverley Street to Saddle Bridge and ASDA.

Works include site clearance, demolition of the existing flood defence wall, construction of a new reinforced concrete wall (pre-cast and cast in-situ), cladding landward face of the new wall with reconstituted brick, placement of new reconstituted stone copings, raising the footpath level, installing new drainage and flap valves, sewer diversions, soft landscaping works, demolition of existing footbridge and left bank abutment, design and construction of a new left bank footbridge abutment as a sheet piled wall with natural stone cladding, construction of an earthwork ramp and new footpath, installation of a new pre-fabricated arched footbridge, construction of in-channel environmental enhancements and channel remediation works.
