Heniker’s Ditch Box Culvert Works

The works involved the construction of a new reinforced concrete culvert (internal dimensions 3.00m x 2.75m x 2.00m, each unit weighing in excess of 20T), 10m below ground level. In-site concrete sections were built to accommodate changes in alignment and the new structure was tied in to an existing Thames Water culvert. 6 Nr access shafts were constructed of standard manhole sections to provide access for inspection and maintenance. Backdrop connections were constructed to accommodate future surface water drainage.

The culvert also acts as part of the flood defences, i.e. temporary storage of excess water from the tidal River Lea. The structure enabled the client to develop above the structure with regard to soft landscaping and park infrastructure works. During the works, we had to deal and treat contaminated ground and excessive amounts of Japanese Knotweed.

Currently work is about to start on Henniker’s Ditch Phase 2 extension to give the structure further storage capacity for flood water.
