Ian Baker
Group Managing Director for Housebuilding
“I began my career in the construction industry in 1986 with Midas Construction on a Youth Training Scheme before joining Ideal Homes in 1988 as a Land Buyer.
In 1990, I decided to pursue a full-time degree in Valuation and Estate Management course at Bristol Polytechnic. In 1995, following graduation and a 12 month sabbatical, I rejoined Midas Homes as a Development Assistant and was quickly promoted to Development Surveyor.
In 1997, as part of my career development, I moved into a production role and was promoted to Building Manager responsible for all production matters across six developments throughout Devon and Cornwall.
Midas Homes was acquired by the Galliford Group (now Galliford Try plc) in 1998 and in May 2000 I was appointed to the Board of Midas Homes as Production Director.
In 2000, I attended an in-house management development programme at Henley Management Centre, entitled Managing the Future which paved the way for my eventual promotion to Operations Director for Midas Homes, during which time I was responsible for the integration of Knapp New Homes Ltd, a recently acquired regional house builder.
In 2002, I was promoted to Director and General Manager of Gerald Wood Homes, the special homes division of Midas which builds units in the range of £250,000 to £1.5 million on small exclusive developments throughout Devon.
In 2003, I was presented with the opportunity to become Managing Director of Stamford Homes, in the East Midlands. In 2005 I was involved in the acquisition of Chartdale Homes based in Grimsby and operating throughout North Lincolnshire. As Managing Director of both businesses, I was responsible for the integration and rebranding of Chartdale Homes into Galliford Try as Stamford Homes North.
Following the acquisition of Linden Homes, I was promoted to the position of Divisional Managing Director responsible for Midas Homes, Gerald Wood Homes, Stamford Homes Midlands, Stamford Homes North, Linden Homes Western and Linden Homes Southern.
In 2009, I was appointed Group Managing Director for all the Group’s Housebuilding activities.”
