Herbert Art Gallery

Galliford Try undertook a design and build contract for the second phase of the redevelopment of Herbert Art Gallery and Museum in the heart of Coventry city centre.

Phases 2 and 3 of the project involved the demolition of two buildings, the construction of a major extension to the existing museum, and the refurbishment of existing galleries.

The development is located on a very prominent site in close proximity to Coventry Cathedral, Coventry University and the cathedral conservation area. One of the biggest challenges Galliford Try faced on this project was the existence of a 17th century vault on the construction site, which was carefully protected by temporary works. Visitors to the gallery are able to view the vault following its completion.

As part of the development, the existing building was remodelled and refurbished to provide education, conservation and storage areas for Coventry City’s collections, as well as new art galleries. A covered glazed courtyard formed a new entrance to the museum.

An adjoining single storey building provide reading areas and tourist information. The contract also included external works and landscaping and was secured as a single stage design and build form of contract with contractor design portions.
