West Kent College
This project entails the redevelopment of an existing Further Education (FE) campus in West Kent with the construction of 20,000 sq m new teaching accommodation. Known as “Campus 21” – this is one of the largest projects of its kind in the FE sector. The completed campus will provide 21st century education and training facilities for learners throughout the local area. A total of 5,000 students are registered at the college with around 1,700 students on site at any one time.
Work is well underway in preparation for state-of-the-art facilities which will result in a superb educational environment. The new buildings will be linked by an impressive atrium forming a 10m slope from back to front, allowing three “learning steps” which will provide centres for different activities.
The building works began in August 2008 and are on schedule for students and staff to move into by the first completed phase in Spring 2010. The second phase of the project, due to be completed late Summer 2011, with the final demolition and external works extending into the Autumn, will make the build similar to the current campus size.
External works include roads, infrastructure, landscaping and the creation of 580 car parking spaces.
The team have been working closely with school representatives to ensure a smooth transi-tion whilst the works are carried out.
