This project involved the construction of a new building on the site of the existing Leigh City Technology College. Featuring four three-storey "colleges" in addition to a sports hall, the building covers a total area of 13,000 sq m.
Construction elements include piled reinforced concrete frames with roofs in curved "Kalzip" and ETFE (ethylene tetrafluoroethylene) foil. Providing state-of-the-art facilities for the college’s 1,400 students, the academy accommodates a lecture theatre, sports block and changing rooms, kitchen/catering, admin, drama, arts and music – an innovative “winter garden” area will feature an ETFE translucent roof.
Key educational features in the new building include:
Four self-contained colleges - Brunel, Da Vinci, Darwin and Chaucer.
Flexible learning spaces - double sized classrooms, learning plazas, specialist centres of excellence for business, sport and technology.
Inspirational recreational spaces including two winter gardens.
Leading-edge, industry standard technology in all areas.
The project involved close collaboration with the school including our senior staff giving presentations at assemblies regarding safety and design and providing site tours.
